I did the JMT in 1971, with no bear canisters and no bear problems, and no bear sightings. I was, however, attacked by a deer. He was standing right by my sleeping bag, laid out on a tarp, and jumped straight up, and came down with all 4 feet right square on my sleeping bag. Luckily, I was not in the sleeping bag, but observing from about 50' away. Vicious bastard deer!

Yes, please pack bear spray. I'm sure there are several other insecurities out there that you'll need to pack as well. Don't forget an ax and a saw for your firewood. Why you're at it, make sure you purchase a bigger pack to be able to haul all this stuff. Then you'll be just like every other hiker out there. At least this is a legitimate concern. Most people bring along a tool to dig a hole when there are sharp rocks everywhere that do just as good of a job.
