I'm in the market for a 600ml Ti Mug/Pot for morning coffee and single serving meals used with a custom Four Dog Stove Ti Esbit stove and MYOG aluminum flashing windscreen. Narrowing it down to the final two I'm a bit confused with how the volume computes. Snow Peak Titanium 600ml Mug/Pot 2.8oz: Dimensions: 3.8"(W) X 4"(H) = 600ml / 21.2oz Volume Toaks Light Titanium 650ml Mug/Pot 2.1oz, 2.8oz with lid: Dimensions: 3.75"(W) X 3.75"(H) = 650ml / 22oz Volume Based on the manufactures specifications on width and height it would seem the SP would have slightly more volume but Toaks gives a greater total volume (even stating that filled to the rim it is 675mls)…..so what am I missing? Is Snow Peak just being conservative? Any insight/thoughts/suggestions welcome :-) Thanks

SP 600ml & Toaks 650ml Pot/Mug Question

I don't know about SP, but have plenty of experience with consistently boiling 2.5 cups in my Toaks 650. 1 cup breakfast + 1.5 cup drink in the morning. 1.5 cup dinner + 1 cup drink in the evening. I never let it boil over, and remove it from the stove at around 200°F. The top mark is the 2.5-cup one.
Could do with thickness of titanium, and its composition. I have two bowls one by Snow Peak and one by Toaks, the SP one is silver in colour and smooth, the Toaks is dark grey and a bit rougher to touch.
Chem. composition can not account for the published differences. Thickness however could make a big difference. The Toaks measures Ø3.74" ID at the mouth opening, and Ø3.96 OD at the lip. From the photos I've seen of the SP, it has a more pronounced lip, and that's where the OD dimension they post (of Ø3.8") was taken. Meaning that its body is narrower than the Toaks' (around Ø3.54" ID as Snowpeak posts it on their web site), and this is why it is taller @ 4" to make up the difference in volume. Either one is a good choice, however the Toaks has a lid at equal weight, and is a proven 2.5cupper – hence my preference.
Have used the Toaks 650 for awhile now … love it. The size is perfect for 2 cups (even a little more) and weight is 2.8 with the included lid. Could even by lightened further with a Ruta Locura Carbon lid. I've played with a Toaks 550 as a 2 cup pot … I find it tough as you really have to watch for boil over and with minimal bubbling/boiling it can be a treat to pull off of the stove. All this means I usually remove it right before boil (as someone else mentioned already.) Definitely recommend the Toaks 650 … great price/value and product.
Thanks for all the insightful replies. I kind of figured it had to do with the Titanium thickness and internal vice external diameter as I found the 3.8" external diameter and 3.5" internal diameter of the Snow Peak….but didn't see the internal diameter published on the Toaks website. I prefer a Titanium Lid. I have a Ruta Locura Carbon Fiber Lid for an old BPL 475ml Trapper's Mug and it just doesn't fit tight enough for my liking. Again…thanks. Looks as if the Toaks will be the one I'll be ordering. Cheers
