I'm trying to sketch out a 2-3 day fall trip with a PCT buddy, and we're looking into the Dolly Sods as a possible destination for the hike. (We're coming from Philly/DC, respectively, so we're trying to keep it within that general area). I've been spending a chunk of time online trying to do my homework on the area and plan out possible routes, but the vast majority of what I'm finding seems to be stuff in the 10-20 mile range. Depending on how much time we have, we'd likely be looking for something in the 30-45 mile range (give or take). I know the DSW isn't a gigantic area, but I'd be curious to hear from anybody who put together a "longer" (relatively speaking here) route in the area. I'm also a bit concerned about usage by hunters, as I know that a few seasons are going to be open by the time we get out there. SNP is my usual fall stomping grounds, so I don't typically have to think about this. Any thoughts/comments are appreciated.

You can do it (I've done it) but you need to be creative about how you loop the trails. And you'll definitely want to include Roaring Plains in your adventure as well. If you print and play with these maps you can figure out a configuration. For those miles you're going to be doing almost all the trails in both areas! http://www.wvhighlands.org/Pages/Maps_DSRP.html http://www.meetup.com/DC-UL-Backpacking/events/182736782/
Check out hikingupward.com for tons of great info on Dolly Sods as well as surrounding trails. This guy does a great job of describing the areas as well as provide map links. When I lived in VA this was my go to trails site. I always loved the Spruce Knob / Seneca Creek area too. Check it out if you can.
