Can anyone offer a comparison between the new Fall 2015 Patagonia R1 and the previous version? Is the new design an improvement? I see the fabric has changed slightly, as has the placement of the main zipper. Anyone have experience of both versions?

I've got one on order but the local retailer says not to expect it before 10/15. Near as I can tell, the changes are raglan shoulders, lighter material in the pits, and a slightly more shaped hood opening. I hope it's basically identical to my old one.

One of the things I really about the new R1 is that they now have permanent odour control whereas the older ones that I bought for full retail in the Summer did not. I would get the new Electric Blue and Arbor Green but already picked up some Millet midweight fleece pullovers that were less expensive. Still, had I not picked those up, I'd get the new R1's from Patagonia for sure just because of the built-in odour control.

I got my new R1. The difference seems to be limited to harder faced-fabric with anti-odor protection. Other than that it appears identical to the ~2010 R1 Hoody I already own. Which is still going strong though it needs a small repair on one sleeve.

The zipper on the new model runs right up the center, whereas the old one has it offset so it doesn't touch the mouth or nose. Personal preference. Correct me if I am wrong, but the new version does not look like it uses a lighter material around the waist, under the arm pits, or around the wrist. These are nice features on the older model in that they help with ventilation and you get just a little bit less material bunching up. You really notice it under the arms and the lower back. The old one also feels better when tucked into a climbing harness. The lighter material around the wrist on the old one is nice when you have large mittens on. I would like to know if the overall length is the same and if the zipper still comes down really low for venting. Anyways, I am glad I picked up one of the old ones once I saw the new design.

Compared to the prior R1, the lighter material on the bottom is gone. Looking closely, the neck design is worse too — it used to be a single, shaped piece of fabric that followed the throat; now it is four separate pieces stitched together — and the fit is not as snug around the neck. An additional change is that the chest pocket used to be made with a light fabric outside the grid fabric. Now the grid fabric is the outer fabric and the pocket is inside the grid fabric. And the large one-piece zipper shed at the neck has been replaced with a split shed. And the rubberized main zipper pull has been replaced by a standard pull with a mitten pull attached. And the size L is slightly larger and less fitted than the older one. All in all, the changes all look like cost saving moves. I definitely prefer the old one, but won't return this one.
