OK, after the last bout of suggestions I got a quilt for the
two of us. As of now my wife is using a
womens pro lite 4l and I have a pro lite 3-s.
Will these be OK for May to Sept backpacking in Mn and 1 trip yearly out West? We are in our 50's.

There are few gear choices where YMMV applies as much as how cushy your pad needs to be but the 50's will be only a memory for me pretty soon and I'm happy with a prolite 3s in MN/WI Jun-Sep and add a doubled GG 1/8" thinlite pad under my feet in May and Oct.

We are in the same age group and we gave up our prolite 4's about two years ago for exped downmat 9's and never looked back. I will leave almost anything (except my spouse/partner) behind to accomodate the weight. ;-)

I'll be 69 in a month and I use a ProLite 3 Women's all year in California. Mind you I don't go out to camp in the snow on purpose. I have been caught by a snow storm and I was warm enough with that pad and a 15° bag.

For us, it wasn't just the insulation from the cold, but the cushyness, too. I'm often a side sleeper and my hips would get sore spots when I slept on my side on my prolite 4. I wound up tossing and turning.
As Jim mentioned, YMMV.
