I will be in Telluride next weekend and have several hours to spare. I was hoping someone could give me hike suggestions. I'm looking for a hike that'll take 6 hours or roughly a 6-10 mile roundtrip. It would be great to hike to the top of a nearby peak. Any suggestions? PS the less populated the trail the better.

I've been there a couple times including 2 weeks last summer. hiking is pretty much up hill as Telluride is in a steep valley. there are at least 2 shorter hikes (2 hrs) from the valley floor. one goes to the base of a waterfall, somewhat crowded by Telluride standards. second goes up a steep wall but not to the top. from town there is also a dirt road that goes up over Imogene Pass to Ouray. the pass is 13,000 ft I think. its a 4 wheel drive road but very scenic. this could easily be 6 hours or more. a second dirt road goes up to the top of Bridlevail falls (4 wheel drive) and from there you can take a single track trail off to never never land (only went part way so not sure where it goes). you can also take the gondola (free in summer) up to the half way point (10,000 ft) and from there take one or 2 single track trails (some mountain biking). not sure there is a single track trail that will last 6 hours, but from the Gondola trails you can go cross country to a peak that is 13,000 ft. sorry can't remember trail names, but most locals in town will know the trails. hope you like climbing, and altitude.
