A question for Oregonians

Wenaha River is nice. It starts at Troy, OR, at about 1600 ft and climbs to about 4700 ft at Timothy (30+ miles). The low elevation at the east end makes it a good spring hike. I've only walked a few miles of it here and there, never entered at either of its trailheads. There are several nice trails headed north into the Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness, some of which can be pieced together for long loops. The river itself is quite large for the area, draining most of the W-T wilderness (the Tucannon R that drains the north part is not as big). What else do you want to know? I've read trip reports on oregonhikers.org, for example http://www.oregonhikers.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=15134 I've been eyeing that for an early season backpack. 2000 feet at the bottom. 3600 feet 30 miles in. It's in kind of a rain (snow) shadow from the Blue Mountains. Kind of a long way from Portland though so I haven't done it yet. A lot of wildlife like bears.

A friend of mine who is a fanatic fly fisherman and I are in the beginning stages of planning an October hike, and the Wenaha River is one venue under consideration. He asked me to put a query out here on BPL, based on what I have told him about the broad based knowledge available in the community. Sure enough, I hit the jackpot! I'll be forwarding this to him.

Yeah, I wondered if you were interested in fishing. I'm not a fly fisher myself, but I've heard good stories about the river. That very first picture of mine is about six miles in from the Troy trailhead, and there's a big bar there that's an excellent spot to set up a base camp if you want to spend some days fishing both the Wenaha and Crooked Creek. Hope something works out for you.
