Is that a wooden pole he is using? Looks like the shaft of a shovel!
I wondered the same thing. Seems ironic to carry a cuben fiber pack and a 20 or 30 oz wooden pole at the same time. But I have to admit the pack looks cool.
I'm betting the staff is for personal bear defense, because obviously he can't kick them, seeing as he used sandals the whole time!
