As I move away from just redoing AT sections and doing more off trail and backcountry exploring, I find myself in need of a serious refresher and some deeper learning on Map and Compass reading and Land Nav in general. Any standouts that people have used?

I have several books about navigation. The two best ones that I have found are: 1. Basic Essentials- Map and Compass by Cliff Jacobson This is a basic book but it is pretty good. 2. Wilderness navigation by Bob Burns & Mike Burns from The Mountaineers Books This book is simple and to the point. They cost $9.00 and $13.00. I have the two you see in the picture. They can be yours only for the cost of shipping of $5.00. They are in new condition. PM me if you have interest.
I took classes at my local mountaineers club, you might enjoy this series of articles Characteristics of an expert navigator: Introduction
Be Expert with Map and Compass by Björn Kjellström. This book seems to be the most commonly reccomended guide for map and compass work. Those Scandinavians are masters or orienteering. http://www.amazon.com/Expert-Map-Compass-Bjorn-Kjellstrom/dp/0470407654/
Any of these three books are good, and I'm sure there are loads of others. There's no substitute for getting out in the woods and using the tool, though… over and over and over, and especially in the dark, in the rain, and when you're cold, tired, and hungry (thanks, Chuck Berry!)'cuz you never get lost on a warm, sunny day! have fun!
google military map reading and land navigation (you'll get a lot of stuff like this https://fas.org/irp/doddir/army/fm3-25-26.pdf ). But, as mentioned above, all the book learning in the world on a subject like this doesn't substitute for real world experience. See if there's a orienteering group or something similar so that you can get out in the field.
