I use a Heineken can for cooking but am looking for cold options where I'd be able to seal a lid and let it soak while I finish the last little bit of hiking. The people I know who do that aren't as anal about grams as I am, so I'm looking for advice on what my options are. Edit: I guess I should show what I'm currently working with. This is something I just already happened to have. It came from Kroger. Offbrand, 1000ml/4.25 cups, 54 grams.s Edit 2: So, I'm slightly impatient when I get obsessed about something. I went to the grocery store and found everything I could that looked suitable. Lid had to secure beyond just popping on (othewise, Folgers coffee would have been included), and it had to be 20oz – 32oz. It's actually very hard to find anything in the lower 20oz range; everything is 32oz. It will be a while before I can get both styles of peanut butter weighed, but the thread will be updated for other people's future reference once I do. a I do regret not picking up this style (http://www.chromedelivery.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/kool-aid-19-oz.jpg)of KoolAid, but I was on the fence about it being big enough. I'll probably go back and get it then if the weight is good, give it a couple trials to see if I can work with a 19oz container.

From reading other entries here at BPL, I've started hiking with a Glad brand 3.5 cup (30 oz) plastic container with screw-on lid. It weighs 2.75 oz (78 grams) so it misses your weight target, but its a great sized bowl with a secure fitting lid. It sounds like you are going stove less but when not, it fits my Toaks 550 ml pot and lid, a titanium wind break, Venom alcohol stove, sponge, food scraper, matches, and alcohol measuring cap. A pretty cool set that's very tiny. I love the ideas that I get from this site.

I just weighed an empty Talenti frozen yogurt screw-top container at 45 grams; closer to your goal but probably not as long-lasting as the Glad or Ziploc.

I have a sub 6lb base weight for most of my hikes and love an empty peanut butter jar. It's under 2oz for a 28oz jar. It's super durable and the lid secures really well for cold soaking. Mine lasted my whole pct thru, and looks no worse for wear.

My 32oz mayonnaise jar is 52g, so the smaller ones should be pretty close. This one is Kraft brand with a fairly thick lid. My guess is the house brands are lighter.

Richard and Dale, do you happen to know what the brands of those products were? I'm pretty silly for not considering a food product when thinking of my options. You guys all opened up my perspective by a lot.

Have you considered just a ziploc-style bag? Even the largest gallon freezer bag weighs about 12g. Seal it to rehydrate, when ready to eat set the bag into your Heinie can and fold the top of the bag over the top edge of the can so you have the same shape and structure to eat of. When finished pull out the bag and re-seal, no clean-up needed.
