Planning to do the TRT starting 3 days before or after Labor Day – which falls on Sept 7 this year. From what I've gathered it would be wise to cache water on Brockway Summit, so I'll plan to do that. Any thoughts on also caching food there? I've done food caches before out east, but I don't know if these are frowned upon in the Sierras. Any other waterless sections I should be concerned about? My current gear list has about 4 liters of water holding capacity; but I could easily increase it with an extra water bottle if needed. I go through a lot of water, so even 15 mi stretches on 4 liters would be pushing it for me. I would prefer to start/finish on the south side of the lake and stay on the trail the entire time without having to step foot in a store. This would make the Brockway food/water cache idea very efficient for me. I'm willing to start elsewhere if it makes sense logistically. -Figure about 16-24 miles per day for me. I'll plan to finish in 9 days. -Would like to park my car in a relatively safe place and I also wouldn't want to return to a towed car. -Would like to avoid situations where I end up with a dry camp. I don't have an issue with putting out a 10 mile day to keep from marching into a long dry stretch without camping near water -I do not want to carry a bear canister. I don't think there are any requirements along the route of the TRT though? My other question is which sleeping bag should I take? I have an old Marmot Hydrogen bag rated to 32 but it has lost quite a bit of loft and down over the years. It has served me well into the low 40s recently, but nights around freezing can be uncomfortable. My other option is a 20 degree Feathered Friends bag that is about a pound heavier. Thanks!

Make sure to search the forums for "TRT" if you haven't. You'll find some good info in older threads. I'd start after Labor Day, to avoid some crowds. I always recommend starting in Echo Lake. Park car in upper lot. Hike clockwise. 50 miles to Tahoe City and resupply. (If you want to not go into a store, carry the food, but since you go right through town, I would take advantage of it.) Hike around north and east side. Resupply at Tramway Market near Heavenly, and bomb around south end to Echo. Water is pretty scarce on the NE and E side (especially this year), so know where you can reliably get it (put them on a map and figure distances to plan your days). Personally I would do shorter days in the beginning, enjoy Desolation, and get warmed up to do a long 1.5 days down the pretty dry east side (you might have to side-trip to Marlette or Spooner to get water). It's pretty easy to do 25 mile days on the TRT if you are used to long distance hiking at all. Avoid the "bikes open" days (every other) on the NE area – it can be TONS of bikes, at least on a weekend. No bear canister required (as far as I know). Make sure to climb Mt. Tallac in Desolation (easy side hike) and do Christopher's Loop on the NE side. It's a good trail to do with a really light pack and load. Love the TRT – it's a great, beautiful hike.
