What about hiking out of northern emigrant? (sonora pass/kennedy meadows). That's a nice area.

Ok i have made it to mammoth and while the skies are not beautiful the air smells fine. The yosemite ranger on the phone thinks that it clears in the afternoons and should be ok. So i am thinking of a loop out of agnew, i have never done koip peak and parker pass as a donohue alternate, then back perhaps vogelsang, isberg peak, granite stairway? I packed a bearikade with ten days of food so it should be fine.

Thanks for the sonora suggestion, i did tuolumne to sonora in june, loved it, went 5 miles north of sonora and had to limp out with a stress fracture. I want to go back but doing a loop there is problematic and i have already hitchhiked all around there, with some difficulty! Kennedy meadows is a great stop (the northern one near sonora)

Got my permit but through Donohue not Parker Pass as there is another 50% contained fire at nearby June Lake. I guess fire avoidance is the new Sierra reality.

All this fire is making me less bummed about not being able to get time off work lately.

Hope for an El Niño

I had to back out of a trip on the High Sierra Trail due to a funeral. Hope the group I was gonna go with are not having too bad of a time in this smoke.

Let us know how it goes. I had to cancel a trip out of Kearsage this weekend and I'm supposed to do Rae Lakes in two weeks but I don't think that will happen either. Right now I'm brainstorming for other trip ideas.

How far north is the smoke making it? I had planned to do Alan and Don's Southern Sierra High Route in two weeks, but it looks like that is out. I am wondering if the northern half of the sierra high route would be doable starting around Red's Meadow.

Some of that may be from the Walker Fire….but we chose to stay lower down, and West of the crest this last weekend. Sad season

I was in the Emigrant Wilderness over the weekend and everything was clear for most of the trip. There was a little haze on Sunday morning but it was clear by mid-day. I was originally supposed to be in Ansel Adams Wilderness but I suspect that was really bad. It was my first time to the Emigrants and I'll definitely be back. That place is gorgeous.

this gov't site (http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4456/) is helpful for following the fire. they report 17% containment as of yesterday. i think it was at 3% a couple days prior.
