I'll go out on a limb here and predict that a book and movie about two old guys thru-hiking won't create nearly the interest and copy-cat behavior on the AT that a book about a sex-crazed, highly fertile, plain-looking, drug-addled, pseudonymous, young blonde woman section-hiker turned into a movie starring a very attractive young blonde woman did on the PCT.

Rotfl. Thank you for making that point. It's not just the PCT either. The Superior Hiking Trail just blew up this year as well. The interest increased by at least a factor of ten.

I think the movie looks a lot better than Wild. I will probably watch this one.

It's funny how the outdoor-sales guy says, so definitively, that he needs a pack cover for the rain :)

The JMT also. Many folks who never considered thru hiking before suddenly wanting to hike the PCT as a result of the "Wild" effect and realizing that there's no way they can take 5-6 months from their lives to do it, not including prep time and the financial issues. But they probe around the Internet and discover that the JMT only takes 3 weeks.

Being that "A Walk in the Woods" will be mass released, I see it increasing traffic on the popular trails.

We need "Deliverance" to be re-released or rebooted.

actually might watch this one. Started the book, but it was boring. Didn't want to watch or read Wild – sounded very lame. I like Robert Redford.

I did read "Wild" in large part to be conversant about the "Wild effect" people were predicting. Nyland ("Strayed") writes well. Both the book and her blog/advice-columny thing. She certainly writes better than she managed her life, sexual health, or fertility as a young adult so I had a "I'm watching a train wreck in slow-motion" reaction to the book. And I'd disagree with her presentation of herself as some beautiful goddess. The photos in the book remind me a lot of the astronomer Mike "The Man who killed Pluto" Brown who I backpacked with in the early 1990's. Girls who look like male astronomers are, I'm sure, somebody's thing. Just not mine. I suspect she's conflating "girls who put out in town, get laid" and "On the trail. With tits." with actually being gorgeous.

I've also watched the movie (I spend so much time at 33,000 feet, I watch ALL movies three times each). It conveyed the more positive threads of the book and weaved anecdotes into a story line pretty well.

I'd never previously wanted commercials in a movie, but man!, if they'd inserted a few promos for UL gear and techniques into that movie, it would have be public service. ESPECIALLY for those who hit the trail as a result. Even the whole scamming REI for a new pair of heavy boots – sounds great, but you can't do that anymore.

Purely from a writing perspective A Walk in the Woods is better. I was however surprised it was made into a movie.

I thought it was great how he did so much research and still messed up in so many ways. It really inspires me to quit planning so much and start having adventures again!
