I like to have a mix of bottles, including one that has a wide mouth for mixing drinks/re hydrating food/etc. My largest issue with Gatorade bottles is that the flavor of whatever the original beverage was seems to linger when drinking just plain ol' water. Wasn't such a big deal when I was carrying two 32 oz bottles, but now that will start carrying two 20oz bottles, I suspect I'll start drinking from it more. I do drink Nuun and other flavored drinks from time to time, but since the streams in the Cascades have some of the most crisp, clean, best tasting water, I like having the option to not taint it with some sugary sports drink flavor.

Has anyone found a particular gatorade flavor that doesn't permeate the plastic?

Strange.
I get my Gatorade bottles from the gutter (nice people leave them there for me) .
I wash them in hot water with dishwashing liquid , don't detect any taste after that.

The last one I had was a 32oz one but I don't remember the flavor, other than whenever I used the bottle, I could taste it. I washed it out without success.

Maybe try Vitamin Water instead? I'm not a Gatorade fan so when I replace my bottles I buy the "xxx" vitamin water (it's got the best name, anyway). It's a little less "thick" than gatorade, so maybe does't coat the bottle inside as much?

I also give the inside of the bottles a good scrub with a little baking soda before I use them. If it still smells after the scrub, I'll throw ~a tablespoon of baking soda in the bottle, then fill with water and let it soak for a while. Seems to pull the odors out pretty well. Also, letting it air-dry completely before drinking out of it. (Maybe you do all of this already; I'm pretty picky about flavors/odors in my food and beverage containers, too.)

Ian,
I also don't like the flavor of most gatorades. I can however, tolerate the lemonade flavor, and use these bottles while hiking. Your taste may vary but you may want to try it.

K,

Great suggestions. I'll try them.

Clifford,

I think the last one I used was a fruit punch flavored one, so I really wasn't setting myself up for success. I'll try Gatorade lemonade if the Vitamin Water doesn't work out.

Mitchell,

While I was born on a Tuesday, it wasn't last Tuesday :)

I don't drink too much gatorade other than to re purpose the bottle, but bought the lemonade flavored one yesterday. Washed it once with plain ol' dishsoap and there was no lingering flavor.

So lemonade flavor good. Fruit punch flavor bad.

Thanks for the comments as I appreciate not having to buy 15+ different flavors to sort this out.

I'm probably late to the party, but if you have Aldis grocery stores around you, their off-brand version of Gatorade (and their bottles) don't seem to impart any taste. I use a couple of them as my water bottles.

They are a slightly different shape though, so if you like the Gatorade shape, it might not be for you.

Sadly no Aldis where I live. We had one near where I lived in NY and I thought it was a really interesting business model.

As far as the shape of the gatorade bottle goes, I'm not really married to any of their bottle shapes, and I'm fairly meh about the 20ozer. The only reason I carry it at all, vs my preferred bottle (aquafina with smart water flip top), is to mix drinks.

I constantly scan the beverage coolers looking for a suitable wide mouth replacement in the 16-20 fluid ounce range, but haven't found one yet.
