I'm curious if any BPLers have experience with the budget Trail Scout pad from Thermarest.

I'm looking for something that I can use both in the backcountry (mostly desert or alpine terrain) and at established campgrounds, which I can't really do now with my current two pads: the Z-Lite SOL and the NeoAir Xlite.

The Xlite has been my go-to for backpacks this year, but my fiance complains about the noise of it–the rustling of the fabric and the squeaking that the pad makes against the tent floor. Whenever I ever bring it to an established campground, I worry that I'll keep half the other sites awake from my tossing and turning!

The Z-Lite is my old go-to, but I can hardly get sleep if using it on a hard campground tent pad, and now with the Xlite, I only use a small section of it when backpacking as a sit pad in camp.

So I guess I'm looking at the Trail Scout as a middle-of-the-road pad in my quiver–small enough to bring backpacking, quiet and comfortable enough for a campground, and light on the back and the wallet. Specifically, I'm thinking of getting a small Trail Scout (14 oz, $40).

I'm about as frugal as they come so the Scout has jumped to the top of my list, but I'm open to any and all suggestions for alternatives.

When I was in the process of lightening my gear, I purchased a Trail Scout short for $25 at a local Sports Authority. For a short pad, it weighs heavier compared to the Thermarest Prolite Short (14 oz. vs 11 oz.). The Trail Scout is comfortable and the material is very durable in my opinion…plus the R Value is pretty good. I used my Trail Scout for about a year until I replaced it with my Prolite Short.

For the price, R Value, and comfort…you can't beat the $40 price tag on it (you might even find it cheaper).

I've used my Trail Scout on varying terrain and it is still going strong…actually had my buddy use it on a trip last weekend.

Yeah, it's a great pad.

It's (rather) cheap and quite durable.
