Beartooth wilderness planning

I'm not aware of any shuttles service for that rather long drive. The Tetons are fine, but I can't see any reason to drive through all of Yellowstone when you'd be going past some great trailheads. A loop up on the Beartooth Plateau would also be excellent, though you'd have to use some slightly less obvious trails than those on the beaten path.

Thanks David for the response. I was looking at a loop on the Beartooth Plateau. That indeed does look spectacular although it appears to be a lot of off trail hiking to actually make a loop. Given the number of lakes in that area I'm guessing it should be relatively easy to navigate.

What should I expect for temperatures during the second week of September? Also, can I get by with my hammock in that area or should I expect to be going to the ground?

Off trail nav is both simple and complex. Generally you can see quite far and stay of course in a macro sense easily, but some of the rock ridges and slabs are amazingly complex on a micro level.

Hammocking would I think be dicey, or at least prevent you from camping in a few otherwise very nice spots. Plenty of stands of sturdy pines, but also lots of bendy and smaller trees.

Mid-Sept is unpredictable. Lows could be 40-10. I'd pack a 20 degree bag, myself, along with a midweight puffy coat.
