Hello, longtime lurker & first time poster.
I’m talking myself in circles trying to decide if I should use the 20d or the 40d SilNylon from ExtremTextil for the below projects. My concerns are durability, how waterproof the fabric is, and of course weight. The 40d is rated at 3500mm HH & 17.8 kg tear strength. The 20d is rated at 2000mm HH & 9.2 kg tear strength. I’ve read enough “high quality silnylon” threads here to understand that ExtremTextil’s fabric should meet its rating but would love confirmation or advice from folks with experience.
1. shaped tarp – similar to 4 yard shelter. Weights for 4 meters of fabric are 7.8oz for 20d vs 11.5oz for 40d.
2. poncho, 108″ x 59″. Weights for just the fabric (and not including hood) are 4.5oz for 20d vs 7.9oz for 40d.
The weight savings for 20d is highly tempting but how durable is it? The poncho in particular I’m concerned with snagging.
Usage pattern is 3 season in Northern CA & Sierra’s, 3-5 trips a year. Currently planning a trip in November, which is the impetus for some more rain gear. Not much off-trail hiking, though some trails are narrow enough to snag and I don’t want to be limited in trail choice by concerns with ripping holes in the poncho.
