I took my son (9 yo) on his first backpacking trip. We live in Los Angeles and there are some great short overnight trips close by. We parked at the Chantry Flat trailhead and hiked 4 miles up the Gabrielino trail to Spruce Grove campground. It's free to camp, you just need to get an Adventure Pass ($5) for your vehicle and a backcountry permit (free) online. You follow a stream most of the way. My son was using an REI Passage 38 kid's pack. I took off the lid and got the pack to get it down to 30oz. The rest of his pack was loaded with his Marmot Syn sleeping bag, long sleeve base layer top, lightweight fleece pullover, cup, bowl, spork, toothbrush, headlamp, camera and 16oz of water. His total pack weight was ~7lbs.
I was really happily surprised that he didn't complain once about the hike. We rested a couple of times. About 1100 ft of elevation gain. It took us 2 hrs 8 mins. We went on a Tuesday and had the camp all to ourselves. There's a low flowing stream running through camp, put toilets, picnic tables and fire rings. It's a nice way to ease someone into backpacking. He loved all the gear. Filtering, alcohol stove, tent, pad, … It was a great bonding experience. We both loved it.
