Wind River in October?

Hi. I am planning a trip this fall. Wind River is one of our top choices, but, while I was doing my research, I noticed an article in Backpacker magazine that noted that October is Elk Hunting Season in the Winds. I checked on the Wyoming Game and Fishing website and backpacker magazine and, although I found the information a little hard to interpret, it appears that it will in fact be Elk hunting season there in October 2015. Has anyone ever taken a hiking trip there at that time? If so, what was your experience? Thanks.

I have been there in early September and ran into a bow hunter which wasn't a big deal (he was a really nice guy). I suspect October is rifle season so I would be sure to wear plenty of orange.

My other concern about October would be the weather. I would expect snow (or at least the potential of) and cold temps. I have been snowed on in August there before.

The conditions are not knowable this far in advance. You could have great weather and no snow… or you could have 2 or 3 feet of snow and blizzard conditions.

Thank you for the responses. Maybe the Winds will have to wait until next year.
