Just wanted to say thanks for all of the things I have learned here so far. I'm off to a good start thanks to the help I have found on these forums. I'm not buying the lightest stuff, but it will serve me well as I help out in scouts and my kids get older and I can take them out. Here's what I have so far:
Tent: SMD Lunar Duo Outfitter $160 – 3.5 lbs – not super light, but I went with the heavier material hoping it would stand up to abuse from my kids.
Sleeping bag: Kelty Ignite Dridown 20 degree bag – 2.75 lbs – $140 with a coupon from Sierra Trading Post.
Pad: Klymit Static V Insulated $60 with campmor coupon – 1.5 pounds.
Stove: I made my own cat stove and tested it out last week.
I've always worn New Balance shoes and I found a great deal on some trail running shoes in my size for $37.
I'll pick out a pack once I have all of my gear from the friendly mailman.
I think I just have the odds and ends left – water treatment (thinking of going with aquamira drops), MSR Alpine Stowaway pot, headlamp, etc.
