Thanks to BPL for being a wealth of knowledge and also to Kevin D. for his great in depth video tutorial, as well as Jamie Shortt for his detailed pdf instructional.

Materials:
Momentum 50 (black)
7 ounces 850 fp down
Gutterman 100% poly thread
Noseeum mesh (for baffles)
18" ykk zipper
Shock cord + toggles
Grograin loops

I just got back from a 2 night trip and was very pleased with this quilt!

Summer Quilt

Things I learned:

– Always do a test first on scrap, whether it be you are changing your stitch length or whatever

– Sew once and get it right, you don't want to have to remove stitches and redo it, especially with lightweight fabric such as this, as you will get holes that you now have to deal with or down will leak

-When sewing always be mindful of your layers, its super easy to get a corner folded over and stitch your quilt together where you were not intending to, there is about a 10 inch strip of scotch tape on the inside to seal off stitch holes where I did this

– If you are going to be packing the down by hand, wear a dust mask

-Don't shy away from baffles and doing the design you want to do, if you go about it methodically it isn't too hard to do

General thoughts:

-Momentum 50 in black isn't really black, it's more of a dark blue

-For a quilt of this size (for an average sized man), 7 ounces of down would be the minimum down worth doing in my opinion, my next one I am going to do 9

-A zippered footbox is nice and really makes the quilt more versatile

-It's good to have a strap right above the zipper to keep it from wanting to separate

Ed,

You really went all out on this one! Using Enlightened Equipment's baffle design is a true winner.

You'll be very pleased. It looks great.

Thanks Todd,

It actually is not true shiftless baffles or whatever you call it- they are not sealed off from each other.

My mom, who is a veteran sewer and provided a lot of advice for this project, talked me out of making the baffles all one piece, which I regret now as I totally could of done it. So it is really kind of like a karo step hybrid.

Ah I see that now, Ed.

To remedy the situation and ease your regrets, you should box it up immediately and ship it to me for proper handling of this horrible situation. I think you'll be nothing but unhappy every time you look at it!

:)

Very nice! There's always something very rewarding about using gear you made yourself.
