I like the older version(the larger strap), be sure that is what they are selling if that is what you decided you want. They may show the older version and send the new one.
I had the older version of this headlamp. I stopped using it when the rotary switch stopped working correctly. I kept having intermittent contact that would make the light flicker or shut off until I jiggled the switch. I have read several accounts from others who have had similar issues.
My suggestion would be to go with the most updated version of this light that you can find. Hopefully the issue with the rotary switch has been corrected.
Otherwise, I thought this was a good light.
I much prefer the string version. It's smaller and doesn't have the strap tangling loose if you go without the little box. The string is comfortable, even more so than the bigger strap when my head is on a pillow. I suppose if you were bald it might cut into your scalp a bit, but even minimal hair in the usual male pattern areas eliminates any discomfort.
The string version is the updated one and has more lumens
;)

According to Petzl website it has 10 years warranty, might be worth contacting them for a replacement?

If they do in fact deliver the old one, let me know the exact amazon link! I have the string one. I like it a lot, but I'm curious if I'd like the thicker strap better.
Katherine here is the link to the Amazon one PETZL e+Lite , I couldn’t tell a difference in light output but I could in the strap and dislike the new string version and ended up giving it away, that person ended up cutting it off altogether.Several people have posted wanting to find the old version for this very reason. HERE is one such posting where I gave them a link to Mammoth Gear which was selling the older version, but I see they have since sold out.
If you have long hair, be careful of the string option. It's prone to catch when retracted quickly. On a trip last spring I had no option but to cut the cable in order to extract it from one of our female party's hair. No fun for her, or I.
Thank you all for your helpful comments thus far
Be sure to bring a backup light. The rotary switch jams with a tiny speck of dust. It's a flawed design. I love this lamp but found I couldn't rely on it. REI has gotten a couple of these back from me.
I'm really careful with my gear. I'm not throwing my headlamp in the mud or anything. I don't break gear.
I like the string version better
