I am one of the founders of Gaia GPS (Andrew). I wanted to get BPL's comments on the new Trail Finder on gaiagps.com/map

When I saw the first demo, I was pretty floored. It snaps to real trails, and gives you elevation profiles in real time. See: http://blog.gaiagps.com/plot-a-precise-trail-with-the-gaia-gps-trail-finder/

It's totally free and in open beta for now. You can use the trails within Gaia GPS, or export GPX/KML/GeoJSON for use in any app/device.

I did some work on the UI, but most of the real work was done by open data, open software, and my colleague Jesse.

Awesome. The profiles are a great addition for comparing and preparing bike routes as well as hiking.

I've been playing with it for the last hour or more, and up to a point it is working pretty great, can't wait to see how it advances. Love the drag and drop flexibility of already dropped route points, so helpful when you screw up and route down the wrong trail.

Technical issue 1: At the moment, for the few trips I have tried to route, I am consistently get a red ' Routing Error' message (I'm guessing that's expected beta troubles, and you guys are aware of it). A particular nasty area I can't seem to route without this error is where the JMT runs along Palisade Creek in SEKI. Although, this is happening predictably with pretty much every loop I try to create over 20 miles, in all kinds of areas and on some very established trails.

Technical issue 2: When saving a track, I get an pop-up 'Error saving', but when I click 'OK', it seems to of saved. Sometimes I'll get 4 or 5 of the same error in a row, before it eventually takes me to the saved track.

Technical issue 3: Uploading KML's hasn't worked for me, but I suspect it's related to my first issue of hitting an area that is causing the routing to bomb out.

You guys are probably already working on these or all kinds of things better than these suggestions, but figured I'd throw them out there for the hell of it:

Easy want list:

1: Map 'wsad' keys like the arrow keys, so right handed keyboard users can maneuver the map while holding the mouse, without having to cross their left hand over to the arrow keys.

2: Right Click &/or ESC key to finish a route, as I spent a bit of time trying to figure out how to get rid of the dotted red line, before just leaving the window with it chasing my mouse and clicking save.

3: Have the 'Delete' key delete the last route point. I see the delete option when you click down, which is nice, but keyboard shortcuts make life easier.

4: On saved route, make the map area bigger, so you can see more map while looking at the elevation profile. Or have a toggle for the elevation profile on the full screen map.

Likely a little more complicated want list:

1: Ability to edit a saved route.

2: After getting signed in, open the map to the last place the user was looking, or have a setting to tell Gaia what to open to. Hate how most online map systems open the user to a view of the United States or Europe, and you have to zoom in from outer space down to something useful.

Totally unrelated to this new map feature, but 'since I have you here' list:

1: Have the smartphone GaiaGPS APP be able to use the bluetooth connection to the Delorme inReach, to acquire its GPS signal from that. As the Delorme earthmate maps are pretty lousy and it would be nice to be able to use GaiaGPS without the phones location services on sucking up juice. As I believe bluetooth eats less power than location services, or at least Bob Gross I think said that.
