Leukotape users, how do you pack your tape for trips? I wrapped some around my hiking poles (as I do duct tape) but what's a good way to carry it in my first aid kit? Can I wrap it around itself or does it become a mess to unwind?

Find a used 8.5×11 "backing sheet" like that used for stamps, or labels.
Cut the Lukeo in 10" sections and apply it to the backing sheet. Then cut the sheet to produce 4 (?) individual strips of tape 10" long. Or the length of your choice.
I carry mine rolled in a tube. Some lay them in with their maps.
To use the tape, cut the tape And backing to size, then peel the backing off the tape.
Search BPL. There is more than one thread on this.
Perfect. I found a small plastic dowel that I thought I'd try, too. Thanks for your suggestion.
I have a zippered pouch for my somewhat broader "$#!+ happens" kit which entails FAK supplies, plus a repair kit, plus some emergency supplies.
Anywho, I love the waxed-cardboard boxes found behind grocery stores. It is a very effective, and free, fire starter. It also has a waxed surface on both sides. 6" strips of Leukotape, Gorilla tape, and vapor-barrier-sealing tape laid on top of each other (in stacks of the same kind) do more for me than duct tape or first-aid tape.
If you want to be even lighter, affix them in 2 or 4 or however many layers onto a piece of wax paper which also multi-functions as a great fire starter, albeit with lesser fuel value.
My wife, for decades, kept duct tape wrapped around her Nalgene bottle. It is a convenient place for any kind of tape. Nalgene bottles were more than strong enough and too heavy, so I now go for Evian bottles. Which benefit a little by being reinforced by a few wraps of various kinds of tape and becomes a less slippery when wet. If you go any lighter than that in water-bottle thickness, wrapping it in tape is REALLY helpful in making it flex less and last longer.
Wrapping tape around a very small radius makes it hard to unwrap. A hiking pole works. A soda straw is pretty small. Applying it to a flat waxed surface, or to a larger-diameter water bottle makes its removal easier.
Test it once a year and accept that you'll replace it with newer, stickier stuff every few years.
If "Leukotape, Gorilla tape, and vapor-barrier-sealing tape" aren't familiar to you, or you don't want to spring $8-12 on a roll of each, send me a PM and I'll shoot you a few feet of them (on waxed cardboard) via USPS mail.
I take an old ballpoint pen apart and cut the cylindrical pen body into a section just wider than the leukotape. Then I can wrap plenty of tape around the pen body. Store it in a ziplock to keep it clean and dry until needed. Leukotape stretches when pulling on it so use smooth, gentle motion when rolling the tape off the main roll onto the pen body. Works great.
Don't put it on wax paper as that doesn't work for long. I have had good luck with the aforementioned label backer paper that address labels etc come on. It seems similar to wax paper but it must be different as the leokotape bonds to wax paper.
Go to a local sign maker, such as a FASTSIGNS, and ask them for a bit of scrap backing paper from their adhesive backed vinyl. They'll have tons of it in the trash can. Stick lengths of the tape to the slick side of the paper and then cut the paper down to an appropriate size.
I keep a variety of pre-cut sizes in my FAK this way and it works great. Keeps forever and removes easily from the backer.
This is the same concept as the postage stamp backer someone mentioned; but it gives you more size options.
I wrap a long piece around a cake pop or sucker stick and it works well. Vinyl backing paper has also worked in the past.

The roll I bought off Amazon has a backing for the tape so I can cut as much or as little as I want, no issues sticking to things or stretching out.
I carry the whole roll in an Alok sack- FTW!!
I / my wife use a lot, and we want to maximize the stickiness.
For about 4 strips, I put it on parchment paper and cut it down to like 4 inch pieces. As I'm almost always giving strips about that size to people for treating hot spots, and makes it quicker for taping up my own heal. I've tried freezer paper and wax paper, but it doesn't separate nearly as easy as it does from parchment.
I also keep a small roll re-wrapped on a pen tube I cut down.
So where are people buying Leukotape? I checked Wally World, and they have it online but not in my local store. Â Â Target? Nope. Â Â Not REI either.
Yeah, I can buy it online, but I hate paying $5 shipping on a small item. I can get free shipping if I buy three rolls, but they’ll turn to dust before I go through three.
"So where are people buying Leukotape?"
I've been getting it from Amazon, but I have Prime and can usually find it with free shipping.
I bought mine on amazon, too.
Also, thank you everyone for your great suggestions. I'm really digging this forum!
My local RiteAid stocks it next to the bandages, tapes, etc.
As for packing it, old Avery label backing paper works well. Run strips the length of the page and cut them up to fit your FAK. Way easier to dispense than rolled and you can cut up custom shapes w/the backing paper still on, which makes it much easier.
I became a real convert to Leukotape but recently switched over to Kinesio tape. It's slightly less sticky than Leukotape, not lasting for quite as many days on my feet and I have to be a bit more careful putting my socks on so that I don't pull the tape up at the corners. On the other hand (foot?), it is much less messy. The adhesive doesn't seep through the material and stick to my socks. Plus it comes with backing on it already, so it is easy to precut the lengths I need and pop them in my first aid kit for my trip.
There are a few different brands on Amazon. I don't know if they are any different from each other.

+1 Greg Mihalik's answer. Learned that from Skurka and Clelland. Makes cutting out desired shape simple. So much more user friendly than in any sort of roll.
+2 to Greg’s answer. I used to wrap the tape on itself in so it was about 2 inches wide and wrap over and over …. but when you wrap on itself or around an object as others have suggested, you’ll find the adhesive tends to get stuck on the back or non-adhesive side that is is being wrapped around …. in other words, when you unwrap the tape, the non sticky side is still kind of sticky … there’s a sticky residue on it, making it easier for it to stick and cause friction to socks …. which isn’t good.
It’s also way easier to use paper backing because you can pre-cut strips as others have mentioned … having those pre-cut strips are awesome … credit ala Skurka and Flyin’ Brian on that as well. I use this backing: http://amzn.to/1gQHM0C I’ve also used this backing as well … works the same as the silicone release paper: http://amzn.to/1IgHEgN
