I'm looking for a one-person, single-wall tent supported by trekking poles. I don't want cuben fiber because I backpack frequently with Boy Scouts and the potential for an expensive accident is too great. I live in Arizona and don't like spiders or scorpions so I want a bug net.

It seems like the obvious choice for me is a TarpTent Protrail, which is a little lighter than an SMD Lunar Solo or Skyscape Trekker. The Sierra Designs Tensigrity 1 Elite looks interesting but is heavier. The MSR Flylite looks problematic in the wet.

What other options are out there? Any ideas?

Protrail, that would be my choice too outside of CF. I have been looking for a while now for a way to lighten my shelter and still retain bug protection. If I was solo I would have tryed a Protrail. I would like to see what the weight would be if it were made as a 2p. I have pretty well settled that I will have to belly up with serious coin for our next 2p and go CF. I can understand you avoiding it in your situation.

Good luck, jimmyb

Do you have preference on side or front entry? If you don't mind front, I think the Protrail looks like a great shelter for the money.

And on a side note, I don't worry much about spiders or scorpions in AZ but one night I heard/felt something digging under me while in my sleeping bag cowboy camping and found one of these guys

I like the Tarptent single wall tents since I'm a Tarptent fanboy, but look at Six Moon Designs Skyscape tents. I think the silnylon tent will take a fair amount of "abuse" if no Scouts are using it.

I personally lust after the cuben fiber Skyscape X. But for now I really like my Tarptent moment

@Chad B – I'd need a Silkwood Shower after that.

@Eric
B – My son rocks a Skyscape Scout. I've thought about the Skyscape Trekker which now has entry on both sides. And the Moment DW is very tempting as well although I'd rather something lighter.

Thanks for the responses, fellas. I feel like there must be some other options out there but I cannot think of what they are right now. My finger is hovering over the Buy button at TarpTent.com…

To me the Protrail is about ideal for your use…

BUT- there is one more viable option is the new Sux Moon designs Deschutes Plus

Its a single pole hexamid type design with perimeter bug netting . It is an updated larger version of the Wild Oasis-

At $175 and 16 oz its a pretty salty little rig…With a tyvek ground cloth and Ti stakes for another 6 oz ,it will be a good 4-5 oz lighter than the Protrail..

You said, "And the Moment DW is very tempting as well although I'd rather something lighter."

I thought you were fixed on single-wall, but if you'd take a double-wall that's lighter, how about the Tarpent Notch? It's only one ounce more than the Protrail, has double side entry, two nicely sized vestibules, and uses trekking poles as per your specs. It does have a fair bit less floor area, but maybe the big vestibules counter that. I've spent two whole nights in my Notch so far and the tight floor takes a bit of getting used to (my other tent is a Rainbow), but having a whole vestibule I can dedicate to my stuff is pretty nice.

Hope you find exactly what works for you.

you can definitely fit 2 people comfortably in a protrail. I did it, it's a super big tent and we were not "together" and no cuddles involved. This was on a rainy day/eve hike too so no we weren't cheating and sleeping on the mesh :) Some condensation at the end as expected since we couldn't really avoid our feet hitting the sil there being two up.

I went thorough a similar decision recently. Living in Colorado, I've been able to avoid the bugs for the most part and have been happy with floorless shelters. But a wet spring and summerr has boosted the mosquito population to the point that it's hard to avoid them. After a couple of evenings spent cowering inside a tiny bug bivy, I made the obvious choice, a Protrail. So far, I've only used it in the backyard, but I think it's going to work. It sets up easily and packs down in a flash. Unlike the other Tarptents, you can just stuff it.

I just gotta say that the BA Scout UL 2 is everything I have been trying to get away from in a tent.

There are so many better designs out there, IMHO, of course.

But thanks for posting anyway Alex, B/C it is a huge contrast in design to the others and that's good.

On the BA comment from Eric.

I like the Wisp. First saw that on Wills webpage. But I've never read any other reviews on it and Big Sky is, lets say, well known for being slow to deliver. Anybody buy this tent? And how long did it take to get?

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I think I've narrowed my choices down to the Protrail and the Notch. I'm going to sit on the decision for a while since I don't have any imminent plans for a trip.

“I like the Wisp. First saw that on Wills webpage. But I’ve never read any other reviews on it and Big Sky is, lets say, well known for being slow to deliver. Anybody buy this tent? And how long did it take to get?”

Kuiu (high end hunting gear) has a very similar, possibly the same, shelter as BSI’s Wisp named the Ultra Star 1P. I’m not sure about the relationship between the two companies, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Kuiu has an agreement with BSI to use their design for a fee. Anyways, might be a good way to get your hands on a Wisp without the drama associated with BSI.

Kuiu’s Ultra Star 1P tent.
