I was lucky enough to get away for a 5 day trip to SEKI with a couple of pals. We went out of road’s end and did a ~64 mile loop that was more or less the “Circle of Solitude” route.

This was in late June. We hit the weather just right as it was warm, but not too hot, didn’t have any thunder showers, but did have to deal with a moderate amount of bugs above 10,000 feet. In some areas the mosquitoes were vicious. There was not much snow around, hardly set foot on it.

The full trip report is here

Here are a few photos…

Dude, looks like you had a quality time out there. Nice write up and helluva nice photos.

Very nicely done. You chose an excellent route and hiked it well. I really enjoyed your report.

The trail up Tyndall Creek from the Kern Canyon is hard to find, read well nigh impossible, because the backcountry rangers consider it to be their very own, and have obliterated all trace of the intersection. If you are ever going that way again, leave the Kern Canyon trail just north of Tyndall Creek, head east to where the wall of Kern Canyon starts to steepen, and hike north along it until you intersect the Tyndall Creek trail a couple hundred yards east of the Kern Canyon trail, about 10 minutes of hiking. It is a bit rough until you reach the top of the canyon wall, but after that it is a delightful hike through some very seldom visited terrain.

Steven: Thanks man, it was a blast. Good to see you about the forums. Hope we get a chance to hang out again sometime in the not far off future.

Adan: Yes brother, good stuff out there as you know. I knew you were out there the same dates somewhere enjoying more or less the same awesomesauce. Both Adam and Dylan had friends doing the Rae Lakes loop that weekend too. Everybody run for SEKI!!!

Brendan: We did indeed, thanks!

Tom: Thanks, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Also thanks for that intel on the trail we missed. We did see signs of a use trail heading roughly the same direction, but the location of it seemed wrong to all of us and we didn't want to gamble on backtracking for an unknown quantity. That trail up Tyndall did look like a steep little stretch so we were ok with pressing onward instead! If I'm ever back over there (not if, when) I'll remember your words. On a side note, I was the "Jacob" that was going to be joining you along with David W. on a high Sierra trip last year. Somehow I was unable to make it, then David also for reasons I can't recall. Anyway, it sounded pretty epic and I hope we might have the chance to meet up someday. Your knowledge of the Sierra is deep.

Art: Thanks man. Good to be out there! I had to taper off running for almost 2 weeks prior to let a soft tissue injury heal up so I could make the trip. It finally healed (I was being stubborn and running on a bad leg for a couple months) so it was a win win for me. Running again now and feeling good! Going to do some trail work this weekend, then self supported 50k. I hope you've been getting in some trail time this summer. John invited me to Los Pinos… but I think it's a long shot for me, if I end up down there I'll let you know.

Jacob, thanks for the excellent pictures and report. I definitely missed a good one. I look forward to hearing more about it in person and planning a future trip.

Enthusiastic +1!

The photos are spectacular–made me question whether or not I should be lugging my NEX6 along with me on some of my endeavors. Of course, operator skill is a variable here, too.

Thanks for sharing. Surely great memories.

David: Thanks. We missed you out there. Looking forward to the next trip… the fishing / beach paella cookout is still on my mind :)

Adam: Thank you. I always debate whether to take my camera KIT, weighing a couple pounds, or my RX100 weighing some ounces instead. I have a pretty good feel these days which trips justify one or the other. This being the sort of trip where I don't really want that extra weight but I DO want to capture some of the fantastic scenery with a decent amount of detail. If you have a NEX 6 I would strongly consider bringing it next time; I've been able to make some nice prints from NEX photos taken on various trips.

What a small world! I didn't make the connection. Perhaps it will yet come to pass. Definitely something to look forward to.
