The plan was to take my 7 year-old son on his first backpacking trip in August, but various things scheduled for this past week got cancelled, so I found myself with two days to spend with just my son (husband had work, daughter had camp). Quickly moved up my plans, made the decision Tues., headed out Thursday.

I chose Siouxon Falls in Gifford Pinchot National Forest in southwest Washington because 1.) the trail had access to a creek, with possibilities for wading and swimming, and 2.) lots of campsites to choose from early on in the trail.

I have a renewed appreciation for my lightweight gear, having to go back to my old circa 2000 Dana Designs Glacier, cause there was no way it would fit in the Ohm. I carried everything, let him go pack-less for this first trip. We decided each trip in the future he'll carry one more thing.

So that's 31 lbs. 14 oz — not including the phone I used to take the photo or my water bottle.

He was blissing out on nature early on in the trip.

He decided it was time to stop about 1.5 mile or so in, just past Horseshoe Creek. It was a pleasant spot, up over the creek.

The new (to me) Stratospire2!

The next morning we hiked a bit further to Siouxon Falls, which was 2 miles from the trailhead. There was a swimming hole at the bottom and he (with very close supervision, practiced some of his relatively new swimming skills.

His ideal scenario would have been to wade all the way up the creek, instead of hiking up the trail!

Overall it was a great trip, very favorable ratio of enjoyment to whining! He wants to do more, yay! As we were getting back to the trailhead he didn't want to leave the forest, he said "I feel like this is my home."

Katherine,

thanks for sharing! We took my son on his first backpacking trip at age 7 also, there was a lot of whining on the uphills but we did make him carry a pack – probably should have just carried it for him (and ended up taking it from him when the whining got to critical whine). I took him out again this year at almost age 12 and he LOVED it! he carried a small pack, less than 10 lbs and that was fine, although I did carry it a bit on DAY 5…not too bad considering. We did about 28 miles from Tuolumne meadows to Yosemite valley via cathedral lakes, sunrise high sierra camp, clouds rest and half dome…amazing trip for anyone, especially a young child. He was really psyched to climb up clouds rest and half dome, and play in the merced, see the waterfalls, scramble up an easy peak, catch a lizard, etc. We got pretty wet on day 2 but managed to deal with it, and had amazing weather after that…great experience for kids to be out there in nature and learn to deal with weather, hills, mountains etc! congrats for getting him out there and keep it up!!!!

Not to hijack your thread but I can't help sharing a few pics from our trip…

Allen – Glad you got him back out there and had a great trip!. 28 miles for a 12 year-old is impressive!

These trip reports are the best!

You can't imagine how much I treasure the few photos my aunt took of me on my first backpacking trips. I certainly didn't think much of the trips back then, but as I grew I up, it became crystal clear who really took the time to "do" things with us. I love them for that! And I'm sure your kids do, too!

Enjoy the fleeting time you have with them, these are the moments they will look back on as they recall their childhood.
