Long-time lurker, first-time poster here on the forums and I'm excited to finally get some advice on some of my gear tinkerings.
My project right now is to find a sturdy way of pitching my Quarter Dome 2 with the fly only, without splurging on the heavy REI footprint. I've managed to pitch the tent before using just the poles and fly, but this puts a lot of stress on the 15d fly material and makes me nervous.
The idea right now is to punch some grommets into 2 webbing straps, creating an "X" that I can lay on the ground and stick the poles into. In theory the X will take all the stress from the poles and then I can just lay my groundsheet over the webbing.
Long story short, I'm looking at making a modular groundsheet system.
Any one have any experience doing anything like this or thoughts on how this might turn out? Thanks!
