i have an 8y/o that I need to gear up for short trips. Rain/wind jacket is the problem. I don't want to break the bank as she will outgrow it, she is rough, short trips allow us to avoid high risk rain days.
Any recommendations please?

REI, Patagonia, Marmot all come to mind. I try to buy on discount.
Kind of sad that there's no pit zip options for kids.
Buy a smaller poncho and cut it down to size. Cheap and effective.
If you are already avoiding high risk weather, then the negatives of ponchos shouldn't be an issue.
CAMPSAVER has the boys Marmot Precip on sale for $48.71 and
BACKCOUNTRY has the girls Marmot Precip on sale for $55.21
Depending on size and color CAMPMOR has the girls for $39.98
If you're not bushwhacking much, the kids' Frogg Toggs (called Polly Woggs I believe) should work fine. They are made from the normal Frogg Toggs material vs the lighter and more fragile Ultra Lite 2 stuff that used to be known as DriDucks. That's what I got my 7 year old son. They're sized pretty large for kids, too, so he has the small size. I think it was $26 for the set online. They weren't the easiest to find so maybe they aren't made anymore??? We do longer trips now but haven't had a major storm yet, just a light all day rain in the Winds last year, but I have no reason to think they wouldn't work well.
+1 to the Frogg Toggs/DriDucks stuff… Kids grow to dang fast to buy brand new gear each year… Although, I guess that depends on how often they get out… My kids didn't get out often, so cheap gear worked for me. My son is getting pretty big now though, so it's about time I can start getting him more appropriate gear… I recently picked him up a ULA OHM 2.0 as his first adult pack… It should last him a long time, however, at some point I may need to get a bigger belt…
Anyway, I also found some Coleman plastic jackets at our local Walmart for about $10 that they have used.

As did I. I didn't think it would hold up as well as the Frogg Toggs, which I also wanted for the pants, but we haven't put a lot of use on either one. He did just rip off a couple of the snaps at the wrist on the Coleman at Cub Scout day camp this past week. :P
+1 on the kid's frogg toggs. Haven't put it to the test yet, but fits the bill. And yes, the do run large, S is more than ample for my tall 7 year old.
