So I might've made the mistake of buying a new pack before i trimmed my base weight down as far as I thought I'd take it.

With my ULA Circuit weighing 41oz, I've got my best weight at 14 pounds. This is with a heavier TarpTent Moment DW which I thoroughly enjoy and do not see myself going for lighter options.

So at that base weight, is my pack a little bit overkill? Do I even need a framed backpack or should I be looking at some light options?

Steve,
I think it all depends on how long you will be out. And, how much water you need. It can be argued that carrying water for a week in the desert will easily exceed any UL packs capacity…20 pounds in water alone will tax many packs to the limits considering other gear, food and fuel.

Assuming you do mostly standard stuff, through mixed forest with water available at least once per day, NO. The pack is fine. Longer duration trips can be made if you ignore the popular wisdom of 2pounds per day of food (I typically carry about 1.1 pounds per day.) If you WANT a lighter pack, go for it. Since the base weight usually includes the pack, I could recommend a lot of different packs, depending on what you want to do. But you are surely capible of 15 pounds plus 2 pounds of food per day plus another 2 pounds of carried water. You will be around 22-25 pounds for 3-4 days out.
