I ride Pearl Izumi Elites. Big fan of bib shorts as well.
I'm a roadie for 95% of my riding so I tend to lean towards bibs and a jersey.
If you're looking for something that's inexpensive, Performance and Nashbar house brands tend to be great value. I've got two pairs of Performance shorts that I wear under normal clothes for commuting and when my "nice roadie kits" are dirty.
The best chamois I've ridden on are the DeSoto "400 mile bibs" with 14mm Ceramico chamois (it was a "reward purchase" for hitting 2500 miles last summer…40% off helped offset the price tag). If you're willing to spend big I don't you'll be hard pressed to find something nicer.
The Pearl Izumi's that Doug mentioned are good too.
I like Zoic baggy style shorts with their removable liner— your choice model with pockets and vents. Other than that, most loose hiking shorts with an added chamois liner are good.
I tried a brief style liner vs a long boxer style and found they chafed at the leg bindings. I was hoping for cooler, but chafing is certainly a no-go. The longer legs help the outer fabric slide without rubbing too.
Thanks for the comments. I did the Katy Trail Ride last week with mileages from 37 to 69+ over 5 days. I ended up going with tri shorts (worn under baggy short) from STP, Canary brand that did good enough ; ). I still got some soreness over my left sit bone. At least one person looked like they could not hardly sit down by the last day..lol..ouch.
