Gah! I have been looking at softshells and I love the Rab Vapour Rise smock, but it has double zippers!

Why is this? I can barely handle double zippers in normal weather, add a few drinks and I have problems! Add the New England winter, a few drinks, and gloves and I can barely get them to work! I can't imagine what it's like under actual winter hiking when I'm tired (this equals a few drinks) Why do they put these things on?

Is the idea that the soft shell would not have to come off so I wouldn't have to muss with doing and undoing the zipper on the move? I notice that no insulation pieces have double zippers. What's the deal?

Edit: Where does one buy Rab gear? Any overseas BPL members willing to possibly do some paypal stuff?

It's a smock, there is no reason to undo the zip and it's probably not even possible to do so.

On a jacket double zippers require some attention. I found it easier to do them when you aren't actually touching the zippers but just holding the jacket straight.

prolitegear website would seem to be the one. I think Rab is looking to expand into US so contacting them may yield some other places.

Christian,

Yes, it is a smock. Which makes even less sense. Why would you have to use the zipper from the bottom? I meant to mention the jacket also because that is where it was really an issue, but you responded on this fact anyways!

Richard,

Nice! I will call them and see what there plans are!

Regarding purchasing RAB in the US: I special-ordered a RAB Generator smock through Neptune Mountaineering and it just arrived. It took almost 2 months due to back-ordering at RAB but still I was very pleased with Neptune's service.

(At some point I hope to write a review of the Generator. It's a nice alternative to the Cocoon.)

"-Deep 2-way YKK zip allows bellowing ventilation and reduces flapping fabric"
I guess you can make a wind scoop out of it.

Lots of climbing parkas have double zips so you can work with your harness.

I actually think it is a pretty neat function. You could ventilate your torso while still keeping some protection on your neck. And, as mentioned above, you wouldn't have it "come off your shoulders" when ventilating in windy conditions.
As for doing up the zipper…since it's a pullover, you probably wouldn't have it completely undone.
