Hi all, I am planning a quick 4 night trip for August to an area I haven't been to before. I am wondering if anyone here has been there, and could give any details.

From the JMT 5 miles or so South of Selden Pass we are going to head South off the JMT, off trail to Heather Lake. Then over Mosquito Pass to Upper and Lower Indian Lakes from there head east through the Red Rock Basin to Thompson Lake and finally back down to Florence Lake.

I am taking a group that has done a bit of backpacking, but not much in the high Sierra. I am wondering if anyone has any input on the route from the JMT to Heather Lake and over Mosquito Pass? The rest of the trip looks pretty easy going. Would dogs do ok getting over mosquito pass, or is it a big Boulder field? Any input or advice would be awesome!

Thanks!!

I've only hiked in from the south to Lower Indian Lake. Mosquitoes were horrible, but the trail in that section was a piece of cake. Can't help you about the other side of the pass….

This should get you started. Manfred's excellent write up of a trip with his family should lay your fears at least partially to rest, if you are hiking in August conditions. For some perspective on how Mosquito Pass can be when snow conditions are normal, probably not this year, I have included a link to a report by Bill Finch. He is a very experienced Sierra hiker.
