Greetings. I need advice on a really good lip balm. I hiked last weekend and ended up getting a cold sore. I was using "Herpecin L" with spf 30. It seemed like it wore off rather quickly. Does anyone have a brand that has staying power and keeps the cold sores at bay?

I use a Blistex version w/High SPF that wears off quicker than I'd like, too.

Will be watching this thread…

The old Zinc Oxide perhaps?

The best lip balm is Honey scented Burt's Bees. That's only because I brought it on my first long section of the PCT and now anytime I smell that smell I'm instantly brought back to the excitement of being on the PCT for the first time.

This one is my favorite. And it's getting harder to find.

I have tried so many different lip balms, and this one has the best staying power. It is the only one I've found that will last all night. I apply it before bed and in the morning it still remains. And during the day, it stays put until meal time.

I've been using this for a while – stays on a long time and is factor 50.

Everyone has their favourite … mine is Mentholatum Natural Ice Medicated Lip Balm. I've been using it for about 25 years, and it is "da bomb".

I used to find it in stores in Canada, but now that I'm in the US, I have to order it on line.

If they were truly cold sores, that’s caused by the Herpes virus. And there is no cure for that. Maybe sun and wind can cause a breakout.

For healing lips after they’re sunburnt (every time I do extended glacier travel!), my favorite is Blistex Lip Medex. It comes in a small blue jar. Has more analgesics than anything else I’ve seen for lips.

For sun protection, I recommend Joshua Tree SPF 50 Sun Stick. It’s good for the whole face too.

And whatever you put on your lips, they will be even better protected when coupled with a good hat with a broad brim.  And/or an sun-umbrella like a Chrome Dome.

Another vote for the honey Burts Bees. No menthol or whatever burns in the regular version. Long lasting. No SPF though.

I just had a good experience with Coppertone SPF 50, flows easily. The high SPF ones seem to have a wierd taste, and I can’t stand the Banana Boat version.

Ingredients I’ve found helpful in cold sore prevention/relief/healing: L-Lysine, zinc, honey, and tea tree oil.

Lysine+ is the only balm I know of that includes lysine. (Kiss My Face used to) but it’s too nasty to use unless I feel like I might be getting one.

I usually bring three (gasp!):

*my everyday unscented All Good

*a high-SPF sports type (Sawyer?)

*the  Lysine+ brand stick

(and now I’m going to have the Violent Femmes stuck in my head for the rest of the day)
