Early November trip suggestions please

Where are you flying in to, and what general geographic region do you want to hike in? Desert, Western Mountains, or what?

We haven't made any reservations, I'm open to anywhere in the US. No preference for one part of the US vs another. I've toyed with the SW, Smokey Mtns, Ozark Trail.

Mountains in Idaho (Sawtooths, White Clouds) will be cold in November, and have a possibility of snow, but could be beautiful. Same with the Sierra Nevada, Cascades, Olympics.

How about Grand Canyon? Its the same view any time of year, and it would not be likely to get snow, but it might be cold. Might be the perfect time (during the off season) to hit Havasu Canyon.

Also, canoe trip on a big mountain lake, with fishing and day hikes, like Ross Lake, Lake Chelan, Yellowstone Lake.

Grand Gulch in So. Utah, but water would be difficult, and it still would be cold.

Hikes east of the Mississippi, I'll leave to others for advise.

Thanks for the information, appreciate. I was contemplating the Grand Canyon. Haven't poured over a map of that place in a while. Will pull it up again to take a look. Any recommended loops there?

I'm good with temps down to freezing or so, it's cold temps and snow we're trying to escape. This would be early November.

There are some trip reports on routes in the GC, in the forum section on post trip reports. That might be a nice change of pace for you Alaska folks.

I really enjoyed the Gila River canyon area in New Mexico when I went through there in late Oct or early Nov a few years ago. You get your feet wet a lot, but it's a fun area, and even has a hot springs or two. You don't get long distance views, but more of a sort of "intimate beauty". I liked it well enough that I hope to hike it with my wife some year.

I hiked half the Florida trail in January; the FT might be do-able in Nov? Dunno, maybe water levels or something else might not be optimal then.

Patagonia might be nice …

Thanks for the Gila suggestion. I had read about it on and off over the last many years. I researched it some more after your suggestion. I think this will be it. Looks great, beautiful, and we may even be able to get some fishing in. Going to create a new Gila post for further suggestions.

How about a trip to Cumberland Island and the Okefenokee Swamp? Canoe or kayak across the Okefenokee (2 days), and spend 2 days exploring Cumberland Island (either take a ferry to the Island or kayak there).
