I try to hit Saguaro NP at least 1x/year as its only an hour drive from my house. I'm always amazed at how empty the backcountry is. Maybe people don't know there is backpacking there? Maybe they don't know how to get a permit? So I made a little video of how to do a backpack from the Loma Alta TH to Grass Shack CG. Nice hike when the saguaros and other cacti are in bloom:

Great little video Kurt! Valeries' backyard, an hour from my home on the border. We saw a huge (for this area) influx of Arizona Trail Hikers this year…like 40 aspiring thrus on the register at Montezuma Pass and folks from elsewhere that I met on a hundred mile section hike south this spring said they just couldn't believe the variety of terrain and flowers here. Most people's preconceptions of Arizona are SNP type, but it's much more diverse, which folks can see a bit in your film with Grass shack being in the pines.
And this year was the best for water we've seen in decades so it was especially nice in that we saw flowers we have never seen, and more colors. My rainbow cactus garden really bloomed well this week.

Nice video. When I lived in Tucson, I spent a lot of time in Saguaro East. I was a volunteer with the NPS and wandered all over the Rincon's identifying, mapping and removing invasive plants. I miss it.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to respond. SNP is a very special place, but certainly not representative of all of Arizona. That's what has really impressed me in the 6 years I've lived here is the great diversity of this place.

One of my favorite places too. Once upon a time I lived in Bisbee (remember I am an old Hippie) and just love southern Arizona. Did some hiking near your route a couple months ago.

Be careful of what you wish for ;-)
