Hello,
I am trying to plan a trip in mid Aug to RMNP.
I am an average speed hiker, looking for 10-12 miles a day, for four nights, plus/minus one night is not an issue. I prefer staying on trails. I am not that expert on navigating off trails, even though I carry a gps in case needed.
What I have in mind is classical Colorado alpine type of hike, like mountain passes, mountains lakes, and things like that.
I will do Long Peaks on a separate day hike, so I prefer not to include this in this hikes, unless someone has a good plan
after quick look at map, I kinda like to do the trail starting from Bear Lake going west, then take continental divide to Milner Trailhead. Is this doable in 4 nights? and can I get permit from park before that to make sure I can do the places I want?
I have also some questions,
1- Are thunderstorms something I need to worry about during that time frame?
2- Should I avoid hiking certain time of the day? like afternoons?
3-is hiking Continental Divide section that lies within RMNP something needs separate permit?
4- Is the process of getting permits, something can be done in Advance? or Should I go in person to park office?
5- If I can not get a permit for a specific trails, what are the chances to get a permit if I just go there to park office, and let them give me whatever places open to hike?
Hopefully, I dont confuse you guys.
Thanks
