As much as I love my hardshell, unless there's rain in the forecast, I'm looking for something on the lighter side that I can throw on when the wind picks up or in the event a few surprise drizzles occur. I've done a bit of reading and it seems like the Arcteryx Squamish and Patagonia Alpine Houdini are two jackets in the forerunning in the lightweight category. The standard Houdini doesn't seem to be able to fight off much water, something that the Alpine Houdini is apparently designed to do, while I hear mixed reports on the waterproofness of the Squamish. To anyone who's used either, how do they stand up in a sprinkling? Which would you prefer and why? Anything else worth looking at of similar design and weight?

I have the Squamish. The light rain it's capable of repelling is the light rain I'd hike through without a rain jacket anyways.
The Alpine Houdini is a waterproof rain jacket, just a very light one. The Squamish is a non-waterproof windshirt with a good DWR.
Two different critters.
Thank you both. Is there anything else similar to the Alpine Houdini that's worth looking at?
The Outdoor Research Helium II is similar to the Alpine Houdini (similar features, weight, warranty…).
I have a Squamish and like it very much as a wind shell. The DWR treatment and fabric weave are OK for a light mist, but I would not characterize it as a serious rain jacket.
I suggest that you check out the Prolite Gear video reviews of lightweight rain jackets and wind shells for some good info.
The Squamish will get a new fabric from this fall so who knows then what will happen witk the HH.
Fall 2015 look book says that it is keeping the same fabric. Is it different for EU?
Arc'teryx makes no difference (yet) in products for North America and Europe afaik. And their workbook says that their will be a change in fabrics in the Squamish-models, the Cerium-models, the Thorium-models, the Atom-models and the Nuclei FL. This fabric-change is not seen as an update/change by Arc'teryx itself.
