The "black" cuben that Locus Gear use is great. It is not that dark, but far better for opaque quality that the white. I really like it – it gives almost a hand-made visual quality to the fabric, in much the same way tweed does (but obviously without the browns or greens). You can get a good idea of it from color photos online from their website. Here's mine:

White cuben might get stuff on it but it doesn't get dirty — dirt into the fibers like mustard into a cotton shirt. Any color cuben can get stuff on it, the same way any color groundcloth can but I wouldn't describe that as dirty; I'd describe that as some pine needles and sand on my groundcloth.

If you prefer black get black.

I always liked the lighter colors for my shelter – I loved being able to *kind of* see the stars through my tent canopy.

I don't know if is the same spec, etc but this is what the Zpacks 1 oz cuben looks like in the sun. It doesnt seem as opaque as the LG but it is nice and bright inside even in low light. I thought my hiking buddy had his headlamp on me in the middle of the night but it was the full moon.

Thanks everyone (I'm particularly pleased that our host chimed in). I think the black is less black than what I'd imagined. Honestly, I don't love any of the colors and would rather save a few dollars and get a silnylon. But, the weight. Given that I expect to be ordering a custom product I'm trying to make the most informed decision possible. I will report back assuming I proceed with my order.

yeah, I bought the cuben from Joe and had Ron make me a Supermid.

That thought crossed my mind. Very cool. If you don't mind, did the light green just not do it for you or did you want a thicker fabric (durability)? I noticed that the HMG Mid cuben fabric is thicker than Locus Gear so I am a little hesitant to pull the trigger. I can't tell if it is thicker than the 1oz you've pictured above. Any idea?

Both..I wasnt that fond of the "pear" green and wanted something unique. I had bought the cuben forthe kayak sailrigs I was making so I had some on hand and knew it was really strong. I have never weighed it. It still feels really light but the packed volume is a little large compared to my silnylon supermid.
I would probably go with the .75 if I was to do it over.
