Last weekend I took my 10 year old on her first "real" backpacking trip. Up to this point we've done several overnighters at some nice State Parks (and a lot of car camping), but nothing more than a 2 mile hike in. Wanting to make it memorable I chose the Bean/Bear Lake area on the Superior Hiking Trail. With some side loops and hiking once we pitched camp at Round Mountain, we had clicked in 9 miles on Sat and then a little over 5 hiking out Sunday. She did really well and wants to know when we're going back but for 2 nights next time. Hope you enjoy the video.

Thank you for that! I look forward to doing something similar with my son in about 7 years. :-) At three he already says "I want to go camping Daddy".

Maybe an overnight car camp.

I really appreciated that your shots were thought through and held together the story of the hike. I'm working on those skills too.

Crushing my head was funny, I had no idea she did it until I was editing the video and decided it had to go in.

Totally cool. I'm sure the trip meant a lot to you. And the thing is, it means even more to your little girl.

What an amazingly well constructed video! You guys must have had a blast.

Very well done, sir. Your daughter seems to have enjoyed the trip on several levels, perhaps especially the quality time with dad. While I don't have kids, my experience with youth and other people's children points toward time in the woods taking care of a lot of normal "parenting" tasks, behaviors, supervisory effort, etc. that has to happen in the sterile home environment.

Penn Creek's mini-waterfall is pretty cool. Have you ever stayed at the Bear Lake site itself?

Art, nice video. Happy you were able to get out with your daughter.
Ryan, funny you mention Penn Creek. I am reading this while laying in my tent at Penn Creek campsite. The water fall made me fall asleep right away. Very soothing. Tried doing some Tenkara fishing on below the Baptism Falls, Nipisiquit Lake, and Bear but came up empty handed.

Ryan, our original plan was to pitch camp at Bear Lake and dayhike to Mt Trudee from there, but there was already a solo hiker on one of the pads and the other pad just didn't look nearly level enough. For the life of me I can't figure out how there are 4 tent pads there . . . Beautiful spot though.

Thanks for all the compliments everyone, we did have a great time and it's important to me to introduce my kids to the outdoors as much as possible since I believe it creates a more well rounded perspective, especially in this day. Only trouble is my solo hiking days might be over now, she's asking when we're going back next ;-)
