Hello! I am incredibly un-techie, so apologies if this is a ridiculous question. I have an iPhone 5s that I am planning to bring on a PCT thru-hike next summer, and also on a couple shorter trips this summer. Disclaimer – since someone always chimes in to leave the phone at home – I'm bringing the phone because it's practical to have in towns, and I have a son at home who I want to be somewhat accessible to, and having a phone on me seems like the best way even if I don't get reception much of the time. I have Halfmile maps, app and the water report on my phone and a couple of 1st aid books stored on it, but I also carry paper maps and I pretty much plan on keeping the phone off most of the time – I don't blog, take pictures, facebook, anything like that. So my usage is minimal. I thought about not bringing along an extra charging device, and just seeing how long I could stretch the charge. But I recently bought an Anker Astro Mini – I figure it's light and I can use it if I need to top off the charge on my phone on longer stretches between towns. Is there any way to avoid taking two different charging cables? Also, along a similar line, is there any alternative to the 1.5 oz charging cable that comes standard with the iPhones? Like a shorter cord? It has that heavy brick on the end….any way around that?

Thanks!

Thanks everyone. I've been looking into the one Brandon suggested – looks PERFECT. It would eliminate the need to bring two charging cables, and it supposedly weighs .3 oz….looks like this one is certified by Apple as well.

Regarding your "Anker Astro Mini". I have two of these. If I charge the battery today, tomorrow it can charge my phone fully. But in 2 days the Mini cannot charge my phone fully.

I.e., it appears to lose about 1/3 of its charge in a day or two (despite what Anker says). So before you head on your long trip, do a lot of experimenting w/ that Anker. After 3 or 4 days, will it charge your phone? Ideally it should charge it full from dead. And my phone battery is small (1600mAHr).

good luck,

Our Anker packs (4.8oz claimed weight, Anker 2nd Gen Astro 6400mAh) have held a charge very well so far, providing good battery capacity weeks later. Hard to argue with testing it out though, that's not hard to do and you'll know how well your battery cell works.

We had another larger battery pack I bought on sale a few months ago, 16000mah poweradd. I would not recommend this one, the charge status light doesn't turn on sometimes, not sure if it's still working well. But the 10000mah anker pack from a couple years ago? That one's still running strong, we pull it out after months and charge a tablet with it no problems.

Thanks Mark & Barry. It just arrived in the mail yesterday so I've got lots of time to play around with it. Fortunately I got it on sale for $12 so it's a pretty small investment. :)
