For all in the know, I'm planning a Sawtooth traverse for the summer. I'm looking to exit Pettit Lake. I would like to make my way into the Fishtrip Creek lakes (Camp Lake, Heart Lake) and then cross up and over the notch to the northwest of the bowl down in to Toxaway Lake.

Has anyone done that pass? Is the way doable? Google Earth views lead me to believe it's short and steep scree field, a little sketchy but manageable.

Thanks!

That's a great area. My wife and I did it last year. We went during the first week of July and that pass was doable but we were not prepared as crampons and axes were a minimum requirement that we did not anticipate. We ended up doing a loop around Toxaway/Pettit, then driving around and doing some more on the other side. It really depends on your timing and the year. If the snow pack is low/gone when you go, then it's no problem at all. Nothing beats a flexible schedule and regular phone calls to the local ranger stations, lodges, outfitters, etc. for current condition info.

Thanks Shawn. We will be there mid-August. I do not anticipate snow issues by the time we are there around August 15.

We are starting our route at Iron Creek to Goat Lake and then off trail and on about 50-50 making our way south eventually exiting Pettit Lake.

We have done an annual summer trip and have hit many in Washington, Sierra, Wind River, but I am very much excited about this trip!

Hey Kris, did you end up doing the pass you mention? I’m putting together a route and I found the same pass on the topo map. It looks good there, but the real world is sometimes different… 😉

Its an easy pass and often used. You will not have any issues with it.
