Hiking from Tuolomne Meadows to Happy Isles with grandson

Yes it is still worth it! The area of fire damage is relatively small (in relation to the distance you will hike from TM to HI) and is quite interesting and beautiful in its own right. Fire is part of the natural process and it will be good for him to see what it looks like. I recently did a trip from HI to cathedral pass and back and found the burned area fascinating. Beautiful destruction and just beginning to regenerate. I'm taking my almost 12 year old son on that same trip in June.

There is a map of the burn area at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2fotO9uESMFYkNmbVE0U2Q3VTQ/view?pli=1 . The length of the JMT across the burn is about 3 mi. If you detour from the JMT and go over Cloud's Rest via the Sunrise Lakes trail, the burned distance would be a lot less. Cloud's Rest is a better climb/view than Half Dome anyways.
