A year ago, I bought an Ibex ribbies and a Smartwool crew top. Of the two, I prefer the Ibex. It is much closer cut than the Smartwool, stretches out less, shrinks back to it's original shape better and shows less wear (I can see some very minor fuzzing on the Smartwool). Due to it's close fit, the Ibex also feels warmer. Granted, it isn't as soft – that may be due to the ribbed weave – but it doesn't itch so I don't care. Now I'm looking for a warmer top with a similar fit to the Ibex ribbies. I've tried Icebreaker – very soft but the cut isn't close enough (even with a small). The same is true with Patagonia's Wool 3 and 4 (small may have been close enough but the sleeves would have been too short given the fit of a medium). Anyone know of a merino top with the fit of Ibex ribbies and the weight of Patagonia's Wool 4 (slightly less is ok)?

Chris, I'm not sure if you're aware that Icebreaker comes in a number of different "fits", from fitted to relaxed. Check their site to see which fit you tried.

Might check the Ibex Outback, if Ibex still carries it, and also the Ibex Zepher Zip T-Neck. The Outback is a little heavier weight than the Woolie, and the Zepher is a little heavier than the Outback. As its name indicates, the Zepher has a zip neck that extends up a bit.

However, these may not be what you want if you're looking for a form fit merino top. The Zepher and the Outback both have a loose fit compared to the Woolie. They are snug after washing, but loosen a little with wear. The next washing returns them to a snug fit — for awhile.

If a close fit is more important than weight (do you mean warmth as in thickness of fabric, or actual weight?) check out the Arcteryx LTW wool baselyer. I have had one for about 5 years, and at 6'2" and 155, a large fits me skinny frame as snuggly as Powerstretch, yet my long arms cut full coverage. Much closer fit than Smartwool or Patagonia wool 3. The Arcteryx has a wee bit of Lycra for stretch.

I'm having the same problem finding a close fitting top.

I've been looking at the Icebreaker Superfine 190. I need the lightest weight long-sleeve wool top for 70*-90* weather. Does the Tech line have something as light as the superfine 190?

>>> Michael – I tried on the Arcteryx LTW the other day and it was kind of itchy. Do you have that experience?

Rod, I should have more specific about the Icebreaker I tried on. It was the Skin / Bodyfit260 L/S Crew.

Michael, by weight, I mean fabric weight not garment weight. This is going to be a cold-weather, around-town piece so garment weight isn't important. I'm mostly interested in cutting bulk and found a thin form-fitting wool top as an underlayer is almost as warm as a sweater over the same layers. And thanks for the Arcteryx suggestion! I should be able to find something in my neck of the woods since they are based here.

Chris,
Have you checked out the heavier Ibex tops? I ran across a couple last week when I was browsing at Feathered Friends in Seattle. They looked very warm, but I never go heavier than my beloved "Ribbed Woolie" so I didn't try them on. Considerably heavier wool, for sure.
