Less than a year ago I started a thread lamenting how I wished there was an inflatable down pillow. Now there is. Exped has its DownPillow which would be inflatable with its snozzle. I already have their DownMat and Synmat so I like their products.

Has anyone used this pillow? I would be curious what their feedback was. Also, did it stay in place, and not slip around when, when tossing and turning.

I've used it for 4 nights. Much more comfortable than the Air Pillow, and less slippery. But I also strap it to my mat,

I just got a yummy Goosefeet Gear down pillow (made with a pocket for my Exped UL pillow).

OMG. So. Soft. So. Nice.

Got it two weeks ago and used it on a two week backpacking trip from which I got back today. Selling all my other pillows. This is pillow gold. Again, surprised BPL wasn't on this earlier, it's been out for more than a month

Gary,

Which pillow did you use on your two-week backpack that you liked? The Exped DownPillow or the GooseFeet?

After reading this post yesterday along with the review, I ordered a GooseFoot Exped UL down pillow. The order was placed at just after 7 p.m. At 6:30 this morning, I recieved my shipping notification. PDQ by anybody's standards. Now waiting on Amazon. Thanks for the reviews.

What amount of down fill is everyone ordering? You can order any where from 1oz to 3.5oz.

I'd be curious to see someone compare the warmth of the Exped DownPillow to the GooseFeet with the Exped UL pillow inside. Obviously the more fill (3.5oz) you have the warmer it will be. Let's assume you get thee GF with 2oz of fill.

Any thoughts which setup would be warmer?

My GFG down pillowcase has 1 oz of down fill in it. It is enough to take that hard, air pillow feel edge off, which greatly improves the comfort of the entire set-up.

As for warmth, I have not had any issues with it down to temps as low as 6 F. However, to be fair, when it's cold enough for me to carry my Helium sleeping bag (rated at 15 F), my head is inside the sleeping bags hood, which is then on top of the pillow. Never had any issues with my head or neck areas getting cold though…

For those of you who have the GooseFeet pillow case, have you had any trouble washing it?? I washed mine after 2 JMT trips and it has since ended up with a clump of 1 oz of down at one end. No matter what I do (repeated drying cycles, manually trying to break it up), I can't seem to get it to separate and move around.

Any thoughts? I miss my GF pillow case!

On a trip last weekend I deliberately left my Exped pillow at home
and instead put a lightweight down piece in to a Monkey butt pillow case and it was the best pillow I have used used on a trip. The straps on the case keep it firmly in place on a pad.

"For those of you who have the GooseFeet pillow case, have you had any trouble washing it??"

I have washed my GF down pillow once so far after sleeping in a cabin with a wood stove that left everything smelling like a campfire. No problems with down clumping. Used downwash and dried on extra low with other down items.

Like others mentioned I have 1 oz of fill and couple it with an Exped pillow. Great system!

"For those of you who have the GooseFeet pillow case, have you had any trouble washing it??"

I have never washed mine… but maybe I should… I actually just bought some more down wash so I can wash my Marmot Helium… maybe I will also wash the pillow… If I do I will be sure to come back and update with my results.

Does the GF pillow ever feel lumpy or can you feel the down feathers when your face is compressed on the pillow?

Ordered my pillow at 7 p.m. May 5th and recieved it today.
Ordered 3.5 ounce of stuffing with stuff sack pocket. 10D. Total weight 4.4 ounces.

Good quality. Could be used with stuffing in place of pillow.
Minimal insulation value as down compresses.

I was hoping to get dual use from this item perhaps as a neck gator or extra insulation in front of my jacket. Time will tell. While it has a tie at one end, I would have prefered a tie at both endd.

Edit:
"The one without the pocket is just a pillow sewn on 4 sides with loops at the corners.

Cancelled my Exped pillow order. The GF pillow stuff pocket with a down vest inside does the job for me. It will keep the vest handy, protected, and warm for early morning. Thanks Goosefeet for fast delivery, fast answers, and a good nights sleep to come.

I bought the new Exped down pillow and also own the UL air pillow in size medium without the GooseFeet case. I'm curious if anyone has had a chance to compare the new pillow with the UL air pillow *with* the GooseFeet case. I need two pillows when I'm out with my girlfriend and I'm debating whether to buy the GooseFeet case or try turning my UL down vest into a pillow.

@wiiawiwb My GFG down pillowcase has never felt lumpy, and I can't say that I can feel the down feathers when lying on it. Ben uses 850+ premium goose down, so it is a very soft down cluster, with very few "feathers" or quills. In fact, I haven't felt any in mine… just soft, downy goodness! As for how it feels, it is really no different from lying my head on a high down fill power sleeping bag…

@Terran
When I got mine form him a long time ago (before he even listed them on his site), I requested a loop on the closed end. The Exped air pillow also has loops on each end, so I attached a 1/16" piece of shock cord to the loop on the GFG down pillow case, and the other end to the Exped air pillow. When the pillow case is cinched closed, the cord is stabilized and makes a great way to anchor the pillow to the pad. However, I understand that not everyone may use the Exped pillow in the GFG pillow case, and I am sure that if you requested him to put a loop on both sides he would likely do so for you. As well, it would be very easy to sew a loop on yourself with a needle and thread and a small piece of flat cord…

The GooseFeet Gear looked like a good option until i saw the international shipping costs, $30 shipping on a $42 order :o

Terran BPL Member

Thirty dollars shipping would have been a deal breaker for me. Domestically the shipping is free. Now that I have the pillow and see the quality, even for an extra 30, I would be tempted.
Chad: Looks like they took your advice and made the single loop standard with thr stuff sack option. A second tab as you say really isn't needed. My only thought was in using the pillow as a neck gator or similiar. Mostly for emergency insulation, in which case I'd just tie a cord around it. Not a big deal.
A puffy in a stuff sack does make a decent pillow, while keeping the puffy handy. Not quite as nice. I guess if you have a 10D stuff sack and work the folds out. After using my vest in the GF pillow overnight, I find it does flatten out a bit. I have to play around with it some more.
If you have the money and care for your girlfriend, buy her one. If not, buy yourself one and give her your old one.

Reordered the UL pillow. 15% off with email sign up at Austin Kayak. $46.??

Correct me if I am wrong but both the Exped DownPillow and GF down/Exped UL pillows have the down in a layer on one side of the pillow where the head would rest. That subjects it to compression which then reduces the insulating ability.

Why wouldn't a company, particularly Exped who makes down mattresses, fill the pillow with down and allow for inflation using the schnozzle? That way you would get the full benefit of insulation as you do with the DownMat mattress?

I guess I'm not getting the design concept of allowing the down to be compressed. Is it merely for comfort with insulating ability a secondary concern?

Terran BPL Member

The down will conform to your head and soften the pressure points. There is some insulation value where it isn't completely compressed.
While being good insulation inside a mat, I couldn't imagine it being as comfortable. As it is if used on top of a mat, insulation becomes less critical. Comfortable, cozy around the ears. More of a comfort item than it is a necessity.
