Me and a buddy are going to do the Wind River High Route in August. Has anyone done this route recently? Any advice or warnings? We’re going to be in contact with the locals in Pinedale for good beta but would appreciate any tips you could head our way.

Assuming you've read Dixon's report and Skurka's attempt? My partner and I plan on yoyo-ing it towards the end of summer (Wind River Peak to Gannett Peak), maybe we'll see ya out there.

I've only read the page posted by Alan Dixon I linked to. Can you point me to the articles you mentioned? Assuming we still do the trip, I'll be out there the first week of August.

We tried to do it late August 2014, but because of the FREAKISH unseasonal weather we bailed and did the CDT through the Winds instead.

Of course only a few hours after we bailed out of Knapsack the weather blew over and we regretted it. It snowed on us later, in the lower country, so maybe it was still best that we weren't high and trying one of the sketchier passes at the time.

But that was freakish weather for August. You should be fine.

We did a variation of this trip in August 2013. Great trip. We were hammered with afternoon storms the first 5 days and then had cloudless skies the last 3. Bugs were non-existent. We went in Green River Lakes and out Big Sandy. Our variation was about 35 miles off trail and 45 on trail. Knapsack Col was a straight forward but a tough cross. Raid/Bonneville is short and straight forward but up and up. Same goes for Texas Pass. The fishing was fantastic.

Andy tried it last year, and his advice can be found here.
Those who don’t enjoy route planning will gladly pay him for a mapset and guide before they attempt it. That said, we find the proposed northern and southern termini fitting (more so than Dixon’s) and will be starting from Bruce Ridge.

There is a some really good information out there about the Winds. If you’re not familiar with Caltopo it has lots of useful features for planning your own route.
