Recently I have had the opportunity to test a new version of the external frame pack. My conclusion is that most conventional packs are over-engineered, lack easy access and clearly the shoulder straps should be replaced with a single head strap. ( I am still working on the Top Load pack, the hat with pockets idea. I don't want to show any pictures of it yet because I know that the biggies will copy the design as soon as they see it.)
Note how the pack and head gear improves my look.
I am smiling in the next shot because our tour leader has a knife at my back

Very nice work. Quality workmanship indeed. I especially like the use of the ultralite carbon steel frame which can be used double duty to trap small prey – and is that a homemade stuffsack attached to the top?
I too have been exposed to the new external frame packs (basketpack version). Slight variation on the above style, but still the same concept with the head as the main load lifter. While most include shelter and clothes in their pack, this man decided that a helicopter tire would suffice for his journey.:)
