I had already written off the chance of getting a permit after hearing about the record applications, but I got a reservation confirmation yesterday in the mail. I was pretty open on sites and dates, so maybe that helped, or maybe I just got lucky. It's looking like a fairly relaxed trip, with a few short days in the middle.

Here it is – I don't know much about the trail (really, very little), so what do you think? I feel like I should be grateful for anything at this point.

Site / appx. mileage:
White River Trailhead / 0
Indian Bar / 11.1
Maple Creek / 11.2
Paradise / 6.6
Pyramid / 7.4
S. Puyallup / 9
N. Puyallup / 6.7
Golden Lakes / 4.8
Eagle's Roost / 11.5
Mystic / 11.3
White River Trailhead / 12.1

Start date is July 20. I think that was the first day in my start window.

Can anyone recommend a good book or site to help me prepare and learn more about what I'm in for?

I put 2 people on the application, but I don't have anyone confirmed yet. I'll auction off the other spot to the highest bidder… Kidding of course.

Just received my "sorry about your luck" letter. We put in for Sunrise, Summerland, Indian Bar, and Nickel Creek with a plan to exit at Box Canyon, and in the middle of peak season, so I'm not surprised we struck out. I'm going to try and hike the Northern Loop this year as a walk-up permit.

Looks like you have a great itinerary and I'm sure you'll have a ton of fun.

Asars' Hiking the Wonderland Trail: The Complete Guide to Mount Rainier's Premier Trail is a great resource for hiking the trail. Pretty easy to digest it in a single weekend. I have the paperback but it'd be handy to have it on Kindle to refresh the brain on the next day's events.

Filley's Discovering the Wonders of the Wonderland Trail: Encircling Mount Rainier is certainly not outdated and she goes into greater detail about the history of the trail and discusses the geology some, which I found interesting.

+1 to what Anna suggested. I bought some of Steve Burgess' DVDs prior to my first section hike. He leaves no stone unturned and I'd recommend checking that out too.

Thanks you all for the suggestions. Should be plenty of info there for me to OD on.
