So I was looking on my table and saw my empty can of Pepperidge Farm chocolate wafer while thinking about backpacking pots, and just wondered if anyone has ever tried using them as a pot? To me it seems like just a sized up version of a Foster Can, that comes with a tight fitting lid as well! And I go through too many of these each year…

Here's what I'm talking about:Pepperidge Farm rolled wafer cans as pots?

Thoughts?

You had better test it first to see whether it leaks at the seams. I doubt it has to be water-tight.

Always worth a look. I would consider interior coating and rusting with use as well as seam leaks. If I was in survival mode, I would be delighted to find one.

Boiled a cup of water inside, didn't seem to have any problems.

I don't have a weighing scale, so can't say but seems about as light as my GSI Soloist pot.

Well, yes, I think they might work. I tried a tea can (direct from china, no plastic bag inside)that was water tight and very thin. But, it rusted out after about a month. It was about the same thickness as a piece of heavy gauge aluminum foil. Yup, it got dented and banged up even with the lid… It weighed about 5oz, though, including the lid. Really a good weight for a two liter pot. Just make sure you dry it each time by heating because it will rust right at the bottom seam.

Prior to drying it out as you suggest, rinse it with fresh water if you have prepared anything salty in it (Top Ramen, any FD food, etc). Small amounts of salty water will rust out thin steel very quickly. Salt residue will even adsorb moisture from the air after you've dried it out.
