A similar thing happened here in Colorado.

The land owner was gracious enough to grant rights. The land was quickly over-used and abused. He requested changes, which did not happen. He rescinded rights.

State and local folks got together 1) talked through the issues, 2) cleaned up and restored, and 3) developed a way to manage the land.

Provisional access was granted again. Now everyone plays by the rules.

It ain't rocket science.

Hi all, the closure starts on May 1st. It’s from the northern boundary of Gooseberry Falls State Park to Blueberry Hill Road so the Blueberry Hill Campsite is unaffected. The problem was with a landowner who had some problems over the years with people illegally hunting on his land from the Superior Hiking Trail and with some hikers who hiked on his property when it was posted closed during the firearms deer season.

We are setting up a detour onto the Gitchi Gami Bike Trail from the Gooseberry Falls State Park Visitor Center to the Split Rock River Wayside, 4.5 miles. At the entrance to Blueberry Hill Road at Hwy 61 milepost 41.6 by blue fire sign #3486, hikers will have the option of hiking 1.2 miles north on Blueberry Hill Road (a county forest road) to connect to the main SHT and then continuing east to the Split Rock River Wayside or continuing on the Gitchi Gami Trail to the Split Rock River Wayside.

We’re working on the exact distances now, and drafting the numerous signs that need to be posted since there are so many routes to the SHT in this area (spur trails and main trail).

We’re working on a new route on public land to the west but we need to figure out a way to get through 0.25 miles of private land to get to the public land.

No it doesn't. There is the Sierra High ROUTE (no trail involved except for some use trails due to increasing use). There is the High Sierra Trail. Neither has that set of initials.

That said, since I am not local to the SHT, a little more identifying id would be appreciated.

I had gone back in and reworded most of the acronyms to the full title of superior hiking trail.I apologize if I have wasted the 30 seconds of life it took for someone to read the post. I was just trying to get the information out there quickly for anyone that had travel plans on THE SUPERIOR HIKING TRAIL IN NORTHERN MINNESOTA.

If you want to call "being accurate" nitpicking, so be it. But you're just as confusing as anyone else if you can't get the right name for the trail (or route). It's still not a trail.

Can't get mad at the land owner. I guess we should reference this situation when thinking about what to do when seeing bad behavior in the back country (Balzack's post a couple months back).

Yeah, reading that it's not hard to see why the owner would close that section down. I'm glad it looks like they'll be able to work out an alternate route though.
